Colorado Real Estate Education Requirements

The information below is a summary of the minimum requirements set forth by the Colorado Division of Real Estate. For a more detailed requirements breakdown, please see the board's site.

Colorado Real Estate Brokers must complete 24 hours of continuing education every 3 years.

12 of those hours are approved elective credit courses. The other 12 hours are comprised of the 4-hour Annual Commission Update Course. This annual course is updated every year and each version must be taken every year. (Total of 3 core courses per renewal cycle).

Transition Period For License Renewals
Everyone must renew their license on its upcoming renewal date.A license expiring on one’s anniversary date in the years of 2018, 2019, or 2020, will be renewed for a period of time equal to two (2) years plus the remaining days in the third (3rd) year to reach December 31. (The length of the transition period is dependent on the anniversary date and could be as long as three (3) years or as short as two (2) years and one (1) day.) Licensees are required to complete the mandatory continuing education requirements during the transition licensing period. Thereafter, a licensee will renew a license on a calendar year cycle commencing on January 1 of year one (1) and expiring on December 31 of year three (3). There will be a proration of renewal fees based upon the time of expiration.

Transition period: license renewal examples.
Licensees with a complete and satisfactory application may renew a license expiring on the anniversary date in the years of 2018, 2019, or 2020, for a period of time equal to two (2) years plus the remaining days to reach December 31, as follows:
• If your expiration date falls between December 1, 2017 through November 30, 2018 your new renewal anniversary date will be December 31, 2020.
• If your expiration date falls between December 1, 2018 through November 30, 2019 your new renewal anniversary date will be December 31, 2021.
• If your expiration date falls between December 1, 2019 through November 30, 2020 your new renewal anniversary date will be December 31, 2022.
• If your expiration date falls between December 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020 your new renewal anniversary date will be December 31, 2023.

Online Limitations

The Colorado Division of Real Estate allows a maximum of eight (8) continuing education hours per 24-hour period. There are no limits on the number of hours allowed to be taken online.

The Colorado Division of Real Estate requires a timing mechanism for all distance education courses to ensure that courses cannot be completed in less time than the approved credit hours. Please note that your course will time out after 10 minutes of inactivity!

*Potential students are advised to check with the appropriate Colorado Regulatory Agencies to confirm completion of the program/course offered by McKissock will satisfy the initial or renewal licensing or certification requirements of that agency.
