New York Real Estate Education Requirements

The information below is a summary of the minimum requirements set forth by the New York State Department of State Division of Licensing Services. For a more detailed requirements breakdown, please see the board's site.
If you hold Real Estate licenses in multiple states, please make sure to check each state's requirements.

New York Real Estate: All

Total Hours Required: 22.5
Mandatory Hours: 4
Elective Hours: 18.5
Renewal Cycle in Years: 2
Education Cycle in Months: 24

Online Info

Effective January 1, 2017:
Any real estate licensee who renews their license must have completed 22 ½ hours of approved continuing education, three hours of which must include fair housing and/or discrimination in the sale or rental of real property or an interest in real property along with the updated requirement of at least 1 hour of law of agency. If a salesperson is within their first license term, they must complete 2 hours of agency along with the other designated educational hours. This change does not apply to those licensees who are exempt from the continuing education requirement.

Any existing approved course that contains the topic of agency within the coursework will satisfy either the 1 or 2 hour requirement. List of courses approved to satisfy the 1/1/2017 Law of Agency continuing education requirement http://www.dos.ny.gov/licensing/re_broker/approvedlist.html

No Final Exam Passing Requirement.

The New York Real Estate Commission requires an affidavit be submitted to McKissock upon completion of all courses (except non-credit courses).

Online Limitations

NOTE: New York requires a timing mechanism for all distance education courses to ensure that courses cannot be completed in less time than the approved credit hours. Please note that your course will time out after 15 minutes of inactivity! A student should spend at least 50 minutes of each 60-minute hour to receive credit for that hour.

For example, a three-hour course should not be completed in less than 2.5 hours; a six-hour course should not be completed in less than five hours.

Roster

Roster Required: yes
Roster Process: Rosters are mailed every Friday. As per the state: We do not rely on rosters to determine renewal eligibility. The students/applicants must renew online. When completing the online renewal application, each student is asked, “Have you taken the required continuing education or are you exempt?” Yes or No… If the student answers yes, the renewal is processed without further action by the student. If they answer no, a hold is placed on the renewal which prevents issuance of the renewal license until the student submits proof of CE in certificate form. (Those answering yes may be randomly audited)
Roster Sent: Every 7 days
