How is the Demonstration of Knowledge Exam graded?

The exam is graded by two McKissock instructors.  Points are awarded on a scale of 1 to 10 for each of the five primary competencies assessed on the exam: (1) problem solving and decision- making skills, (2) knowledge (3) completeness, (4) organization, and (5) written communication skills. A candidate must achieve a total score of 38 or greater to pass the exam.  The five primary competencies and corresponding criteria are explained in more detail below.

Exam Criteria:

        (1) Problem solving and decision making skills

The response is logical, effective, rational, and realistic.  It is systematic in resolving the   problem and considers the strengths and weaknesses of alternative methods, when          applicable.  Adequate support is provided to corroborate the response when necessary.

        (2) Knowledge

The response demonstrates knowledge and application of the key objectives of the three certification courses, including, but not limited to:

  • Recognize the market and marketing distinctions of luxury homes.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the sales comparison and/or cost approach methodology and concepts specific to luxury home properties.
  • Identify and describe the features of a luxury home.
  • Recognize when a luxury home or any of its features are over-improved for its market area.

        (3) Completeness

The response adequately answers the questions asked or meets the expectations of the    exercise. The response is comprehensive and addresses the most critical elements of each exercise.

        (4) Organization

The response presents a logical and easy to follow flow of information.

        (5) Written communication skills

The response is clear, descriptive, and concise, uses formal writing practices (e.g. the use of paragraphs, headers, complete sentences) and/or the use of bulleting or numbering as appropriate. Misspellings and grammatical errors are minimal.
