FAQs

Why is there a timer in my course?

Some states have a regulatory requirement called a “seat timer.” This means the state wants you to be an active participant in the course for the approved number of credit hours before McKissock can issue or submit proof of completion of the course. The time you must sit in the course is based on the state’s requirement. Example: New York real estate agents are required to sit for 50 minutes for every hour, so for a 3-hour course, you must have an active time of 2 1/2 hours.

McKissock will not assess a seat timer requirement in a course unless your state’s licensing agency requires it. Most states do not have this requirement; however, you may still see the timer in your course and you can simply ignore it.

The following states have seat timer requirements:

Appraisal

  • Minnesota
  • Florida (Qualifying Education Only)

Real Estate

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Indiana
  • Michigan (Licensing Education Only)
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • New Hampshire
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Oregon
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Virginia
  • Washington

NOTE: If you have multiple licenses you will need to make sure the credit is requested for the seat timer state at the time of enrollment. Additional credit cannot be added after the fact for any state that requires the seat timer.

Example: If you take a course for Pennsylvania real estate credit and realize you could have used it for your New York real estate license, too, it cannot be added due to the seat timer requirement for New York real estate. You will need to take the course over again to meet the seat timer requirement for New York. However, if you were to take a course for New York real estate credit initially, Pennsylvania real estate credit may be added after the fact because Pennsylvania real estate does not have a seat timer requirement.
