Illinois Real Estate Education Requirements

The information below is a summary of the minimum requirements set forth by the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation. For a more detailed requirements breakdown, please see the board's site.

Each Broker is required to complete a total of 12 CE hours, including a minimum of 4 CE hours in core curriculum, of courses approved by the Department.


Effective January 1, 2020, all licenses issued by DRE will be required to complete a one-hour course in sexual harassment prevention training.  This requirement is included in the total number of hours required.

Online Limitations

The 12-hour Managing Broker Required Course MUST be taken in a setting with live instructor interaction.

The CE school shall allow the attendee one retake after a failed examination in order to receive credit for CE. No more than one retake shall be allowed. A licensee failing a retake shall not receive credit for that CE course unless the entire course is retaken and the examination is successfully completed.

Each Leasing Agent licensee shall complete a minimum of 6 CE hours from a single core curriculum recommended by the Board and approved by the Department.

*A licensee is not required to complete CE requirements for the first renewal following the issuance of the initial leasing agent license.

In addition to the CE required, all renewing managing brokers must complete a 12-hour broker management CE course. This 12-hour broker management CE course must be completed in the classroom or by interactive webinar.
