This course is designed to provide Michigan real estate professionals with a working knowledge of the history and key points of both federal and Michigan-specific fair housing laws. The course begins with a discussion of fair housing law development from the Civil Rights Act of 1866, through the first major legislation that applied to residential housing, the Fair Housing Act of 1968, and into a detailed look at fair housing laws and practices and their importance in modern real estate. Specific advertising policies, exemptions, and pertinent case studies are also investigated and illustrated. Finally, the course delves into the role of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, and Department of Civil Rights, as well as their role in legislating and enforcing the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights act and the Persons with Disabilities Civil Rights Act.
